Addlestone

This complete ring of 8 bells were brought to us by Gillett & Johnstone.

They were in a fire in the church in December 2003. The Church is slowly being rebuilt and the bells have now been repaired.

Bells that have been in fires are often impossible to repair. The bells can be subjected to intense heat from the fire and then showered with water when the fire is being put out. It is the water that causes the most damage.

Luckily these bells were not affected in this way. 5 of the 8 bells cracked in their crowns. The remaining 3 were annealed (a controlled heating and cooling process) to relieve any stresses that may have been caused by the fire.

Bells 1 to 4 after having been ground to remove the cracks.

Back

Bell No: 7 had a longer crack that extended over the shoulder and through the inscription band. Some over the lettering had to be replaced after welding.

The bells have now been fully repaired and have been sent back to Gillet & Johnstone to be returned to the Church.
