Waltham on the Wolds

This bell arrived in our workshop today.

The bell was cast in 1743 and is 32“ in diameter.

This bell was actually inspected in the church. During a ringing session the bell had suddenly lost its tone. On inspecting the bell however, a crack could not be found. Mark dye penetrant tested an area all the way around the waist of the bell but could find no crack. The strike points, previous strike points and casting marks were also inspected. This was a little puzzling as this was where he would have expected to find the crack due to the fact that the bell was still resonating.

The Church applied for a faculty to have the bell removed and inspected further. In the mean time, the bell continued to be rung. A crack has now been found in the soundbow and the bell’s tone and resonance have completely gone.
