St Osyth, Essex

These bells come from Ss Peter and Paul Church in St Osyth.

They are part of a ring of 6.

The 4th bell was known to be cracked. It was cast in 1663 by Miles Graye. It measures 31.5“ in diameter at the lip.

A Dye penetrant test revealed cracks in the crown from the old cast in staple. Work commenced on preparing the bell for welding.

The tenor bell from this church was also found to be cracked.

The problem with this bell is that the top of the bell is quite thin and decisions are being made as to what part this bell will play in the church.

Back

The 4th bell was ground out and the crack prepared for welding.

When the bell is being prepared it is generally checked over top make sure no defects have been missed.

In this case a small hole was investigated by performing a dye penetrant test.
No cracking was found and the hole was filled during the welding process.

The completed bell has now been delivered to Whitechapel Bell Foundry who will be working on the bell shortly. The bell will then be rehung by Whites of Appleton.
