Winson, Glous

This bell from Saints Michael & All Angels Church in Winson is the turret bell.

It was cast in 1899 by Taylors and measures 19“ lip diameter.

The bell was known to be cracked as it sounded very dull.

However on removing the head stock it was found to be cracked more extensively than was first thought. In fact a piece of the crown and shoulder actually became detached.

The total length of the cracking was found to be 39“. This is shown by the red lines in the photograph.

The bell had to be completed quite urgently as the Church had scaffolding up which was proving very costly.

Some decoration had to be restored on the bell.

Detailed photographs of these areas were taken before the cracking was ground out.

These were then closely followed when the bell had been welded.
