Coaley

This bell is from St Bartholomew’s Church in Coaley, Glous.

Back

It is the 2nd of 6 bells in the Church and part of a complete ring cast by Mears.

The bell has a lip diameter of 27 3/8“ and has a crack that runs from between the canons, around the top and then down through the inscription band.

On arrival the bell was dye penetrant checked. First on the outside which was quite difficult to see. Then on the inside which clearly showed the extent of the cracking.
One of these cracks was probably caused by the rusting of the cast in staple.
The other, probably from a blow to the shoulder of the bell.

When a bell receives a blow it often results in a number of cracks. This means that quite a large section of the bell has to be replaced as in this case.
The bell has now been successfully repaired and returned to Eayre & Smith who will return the bell to its tower.
