Sutton Cheney

St James Church, Sutton Cheney, Leics.:

There are 2 bells from Sutton Cheney which were repaired recently. The Tenor, cast in 1678, has a lip diameter of 34“ and has a crack in the soundbow. The 3rd bell, cast in 1593, has a lip diameter of 30” and also has a crack in the soundbow. These bells will have sounded very poor when rung as a crack in the soundbow greatly affects the tone of the bell. After welding, the sound is restored to that which it had when cast.

These bells have now been returned to Hayward Mills to be re-hung.

The 3rd bell from Sutton Cheney as well as having a crack in the soundbow had very deep clapper indents. It also had 2 bolt holes which as they were no longer needed were also filled during the welding process

The Tenor bell from Sutton Cheney arrived with a crack that had had a series of holes drilled along it. This practice was sometimes carried out possibly by those that believed that doing so would help the reverberation of the cracked bell. This is not the case. Once cracked in the soundbow, the bell is effectively useless until repaired by welding.

The completed bell was found to have a reverberation time of 58 secs.

The bells reverberation time was measured at 72 secs.
