Bishopstone

Two bells arrived at the workshop from St Andrews Church, Bishopstone in East Sussex.

They were delivered by Whitechapel Bell Foundry who are completing the re-hanging work in the church. These cracks were not found until the work had started. The head stocks were removed and revealed the cracks.

The bells are 40“ and 30” in diameter and both have cracks from the cast in staple across the crown.

The bells were cast by Lester & Pack in 1761.

The Tenor has a crack which runs through the inscription band of the bell. This will be photographed and restored upon completion of the welding.

Dye penetrant tests were completed on the bells to determine the extent of the cracking. A hole was then drilled just past the end of the visible crack, this should have stopped the crack spreading during the grinding process. However, in this case on the onset of grinding the crack suddenly spread a further 6“. The process then had to be repeated before the crack could be repaired successfully.

The treble bell was found to have two cracks radiating from the cast in staple stumps. They ran through the crown and over the shoulder. Fortunately stopping just before the inscription band making their repair simpler. The Treble is now completed and has also been returned to Whitechapel.
